Rogers officially announced their “One Rate” roaming plans today, we mentioned these in a post a few weeks back. Roaming is a big concern for wireless customers, mainly because our rates are incredibly high to begin with.Think about stepping outside your country and paying even more when hopping on another network. The “One Rate” plans allows you to use data in the U.S. like you do here in Canada (it all gets deducted from the same data bucket).John Boynton, EVP of Marketing for Rogers said “Our customers have told us they are uncertain as to whether to use their smartphones while travelling in the United States… we are pleased to introduce breakthrough North American One Rate wireless data plans. These plans provide cost certainty to the frequent business traveller, Canadian snowbird or cross-border vacationer to the United States who wants to keep in touch with work, family and friends. These new offers shatter people’s perception of wireless data roaming when visiting the United States.”
Check out the plans below… do they shatter your perception of wireless data roaming?
$20 per month: Personal Email on BlackBerry (Canadian and U.S.)
$35 per month: Consumer or Small business BlackBerry (BIS) 500MB Canadian and U.S.
$35 per month: Consumer or Small business 500MB Canadian and U.S. Data Plan
$40 per month: Consumer or Small business BB (BIS) 1GB Canadian and U.S. Plan
$40 per month: Consumer or Small business 1GB Canadian and U.S. Data Plan
$45 per month: 500MB Canadian and U.S. Mobile Internet Flex Rate Plan
$50 per month: DAP (for MSD customers) 1.5GB Canadian and U.S. Data Plan
$55 per month: Corporate BlackBerry (BES) 1GB Canadian and U.S. Plan
$55 per month: Corporate BB (BES) 500 MB Canadian and U.S. Flex Rate Plan
Rogers has just announced new North American data plans, these plans allow customers to use data while traveling in the U.S with no extra roaming charges. The data used in the U.S is billed the same as if you were in Canada. Rogers claims that these plans cost “about $10 more” than their regular data plans. This is great news unless you are an iPhone user.
Rogers’ press release didn’t contain any iPhone specific data packages, and failed to mention if there was an add-on option for people’s existing data plans. Many iPhone users are on the $30 a month 6 gig plan that was offered to early adopters. No one using an iPhone is going to give up 6 gigs a month in exchange for 1 gig that they can use in the U.S.
I was able to confirm this morning that Rogers isn’t offering an add-on to existing plans and is not planning to offer any iPhone plans. Here is a link to the confirmation on Twitter.

Recent history tells us two things about how Rogers treats iPhone users, their first instinct is to screw or ignore them, and they always correct the problem if there is a public outcry. You would think they would have learned their lesson by now, but apparently they haven’t. So it’s time for another outcry.
Let Rogers know you want to be able use your existing iPhone data plan in the U.S by sending a message to their Twitter account http://twitter.com/rogersbuzz
